China just switched on a machine that could make steam turbines obsolete — and almost nobody in the West noticed.
For 140 years, every power plant on Earth has run on the same basic process: heat water, make steam, spin a turbine. It hasn't fundamentally changed since the 1880s. And for 140 years, 60–65% of all the energy we burn has been thrown away as waste heat. Engineers knew it was inefficient. They accepted it anyway — because nothing could do better.
Until now.
In December 2025, China's National Nuclear Corporation activated Chaotan One at a steel plant in Guizhou Province — the world's first commercial, grid-connected supercritical CO2 power turbine. It captures waste heat the factory used to vent into the sky and converts it into 70 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. It produces 50% more power than the steam system it replaced. And it takes up half the physical space.
The working fluid? Carbon dioxide — the same gas you exhale with every breath.
