In November 2018, Stanford-trained scientist He Jiankui walked into the world's most prestigious genome editing summit in Hong Kong and confessed to the unthinkable: he had already edited the DNA of two human embryos, implanted them, and let them grow into twin girls named Lulu and Nana. The CRISPR edit he made — targeting the CCR5 gene to block HIV infection — is now permanent, heritable, and irreversible. Within 12 months, he was jailed. Within 3 years, he was free. The girls are still edited.
