China just tested a train at nearly 500 miles per hour — faster than a P-51 Mustang fighter at full throttle. Meanwhile, the average American passenger train crawls along at 62 mph, slower than trains were running in 1969. How did the country that invented the modern railroad fall this far behind?
In this video, we trace the seven-decade collapse of American passenger rail and the simultaneous rise of the most ambitious infrastructure project in human history: China's 27,000-mile high-speed rail network. From the 1956 Federal Aid Highway Act that buried the railroads, to the National City Lines streetcar conspiracy, to airline deregulation in 1978, to Amtrak running 21st-century trains through tunnels built in 1873 — this is the story of how America didn't just lose its rail network. It dismantled it on purpose.
Then we go to China. From a 1990 network averaging 37 mph to today's 217 mph cruising speeds. From technology transfer deals with Siemens, Alstom, Bombardier, and Kawasaki to a maglev prototype using high-temperature superconducting coils that levitates inside a vacuum tube at speeds that would get you from Toronto to Montreal in 40 minutes.
This isn't a story about engineering. It's a story about choices — and what 70 years of pointing every dollar in the same direction actually builds.
What you'll learn:
The real reason American passenger rail collapsed after WWII
How the GM, Standard Oil, and Firestone streetcar conspiracy actually worked
Why Amtrak was set up to fail from day one
How China built four times more high-speed rail than all of Europe combined
The engineering behind 500 mph maglev and vacuum tube trains
Why the Hudson River tunnels under NYC are 116 years old
The real federal spending ratio: $1.2 trillion on highways vs $60 billion on rail
If you care about infrastructure, transportation policy, US-China competition, or just want to understand why your Amtrak train is three hours late, this one's for you.
