China’s Car Sales Fall 21% at Home as Exports Surge 88%

China’s domestic car sales fell 21.1% in July, extending their decline to a tenth consecutive month as manufacturers increasingly looked overseas for growth.

Sales dropped to 1.47 million vehicles, while exports surged 88.2% to 923,000. Shipments of electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles rose 147.8%, intensifying competition across Britain, Europe, the Gulf and other international markets.

China’s home market lost approximately 2.65 million passenger-car sales during the first seven months of 2026, giving factories a powerful incentive to chase foreign customers with aggressive pricing and generous equipment.

Export figures count shipments rather than customer registrations, while July’s domestic comparison was distorted by earlier subsidy-fuelled buying. Even so, the direction is clear: weakening demand at home is pushing Chinese manufacturers deeper into overseas markets, where their increasingly competitive cars will place established brands under mounting pressure.
