Geopolitics and public sentiment are playing a growing role in how artificial intelligence is adopted globally — and the contrasts are becoming clearer.
Speaking on CNBC’s “The Tech Download” podcast, Google DeepMind’s VP of Frontier AI Global Affairs, Tom Lue, pointed to China’s increasing engagement in international AI discussions, including commitments made at last year’s Seoul summit to publish safety frameworks.
Lue said that despite a complex geopolitical backdrop, China — and the Asia‑Pacific region more broadly — remains notably optimistic about the technology.
Public opinion across the region is largely pragmatic, with governments pushing for rapid adoption and large‑scale deployment of AI across society.
By comparison, Lue warned that greater skepticism toward AI in the U.S. and parts of Europe could slow deployment and make it harder to scale the technology at the same pace.
