Here we explore the power of actually looking at the waveform of your finished mix to get some visual reference for possible problems using FREE cross platorm software called Audacity.

Objectivity is difficult to achieve when you have listened to your mix a thousand times. Where our ears have become married to certain sounds and loudness levels, looking at the waveform can reveal some glaring issues such as inconsistencies between loudness of parts and loud peaks that would challenge a mastering engineer.
Inconsistencies in loudness between different parts of the song can result in audio that is not optimized for mastering. Not that you should not have dynamic music. But you can still achieve dynamics in a controlled fashion by looking and listening instead of just listening.
