Newly released interrogation video provides new insight into what Chad Doerman told detectives about why he killed his three young sons, Chase, Hunter and Clayton, in June 2023.
During more than three hours of questioning, Doerman appeared confused and emotional and repeatedly described his actions as being driven by religious beliefs, saying he believed he was following a biblical command and that he “trusted God.” He also told investigators he had been seeking help and felt abandoned by his family.
Doerman acknowledged during questioning that he had never read the Bible and instead knew biblical stories he had been told. Toxicology testing found alcohol in his system but no drugs.
The interrogation was later ruled inadmissible after a judge found investigators violated Doerman’s Miranda rights.
Doerman ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and two counts of felonious assault and was sentenced in August 2024 to three consecutive life sentences without parole, plus 16 years. The plea agreement removed the death penalty.
