Celebrating 80 years since the publication of Rev. W. Awdry's Three Railway Engines, we held a special anniversary event at the railway the author volunteered at. Here's what we did!
Whilst this was a scaled down version of the activities usually found at an Awdry Ex, it was still a lively weekend and was even blessed with SUN for a change!! Sir Handel enjoyed basking in it, wearing a fresh coat of fully lined Skarloey red for the first time. Tom Rolt was also given a new happy face, which was to commemorate a fan and visitor to previous extravaganza's who is sadly no longer with us. His family wished to have a dedication to him somewhere on the railway, so no.7's new face was sponsored by them with a brass plaque on the back.
At Wharf, an also fully-lined Rusty (purple and silver on a black livery suits well, who knew) spent both days shunting the heritage wagons, whilst Fred sat by snoozing. Typical!
Along with Sir Handel's Picnic and Breakfast trains, Veronica Chambers also unveiled a new headboard to celebrate the 80th anniversary of her father's books. Meanwhile upstairs, the free exhibition had notes, drawings and paintings from those early days alongside TV series props such as the close-up Toby, Wharf-scale Thomas (appropriately!), cottages and scenery pieces dating back to season 1.
Speaking of which, the release of the lost pilot episode of Thomas caused a stir, and ITV came to interview us for the national news... well, sort of! The evening entertainment at the Magic Lantern cinema in Tywyn saw Rev. W. Awdry's writing guide retold, with a Q&A panel and a big screen showing of Down The Mine.
The Awdry Fivestream team were scuttling about the line working on filming jobs for July, filming trains for season 3 of Dregiau Cadi were up the line, and I ended my volunteering week on No.1 during the railway's 74th Founders' Day.
