Today marks 50 years of “Playscapes” in Piedmont Park, the only Isamu Noguchi-designed playground constructed in the US during his lifetime. Playgrounds, for Noguchi, were about imagining a better world—one that was open, inclusive, and built around children’s imagination, curiosity, and creativity.
Brought to life through a visionary collaboration between Mayor Maynard Jackson’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the High Museum of Art with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and private donors, “Playscapes” opened on May 1, 1976, with a beaming Noguchi in attendance.
