Exploring the work of Sir Alexander Fleming (Immunology) through to Chris Dowson & David Roper (Infectious Disease Research), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.
In 1945, Builogist Sir Andrew Fleming discovered #penicillin. During world war 1 Fleming witnessed the deaths of many soldiers from sepsis, due to antiseptics failing to reach #bacteria infecting deep wounds. This inspired him to being his search for antibacterial agents.
He published his accidental discovery of penicillin in 1926 in the British Journal of Experimental Pathology. Fleming's discovery and isolation of penicillin marked the start of modern #antibiotics. Fleming, along with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, received the Nobel Prize in 1943.
Professor Chris Dowson, from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick, and Dr David Roper, Associate Professor of Structural BIology are working on the unresolved questions on the activity of penicillin and the enzymes it inhibits in an effort to overcome growing #antibacterialresistance.
