The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been at the forefront of the field since its founding — producing researchers and practitioners who have shaped infrastructure, policy, and scientific understanding around the world.
Today, that work spans an unusually wide range: materials research informing osteoarthritis treatment and earthquake prediction; sustainable housing designed around the needs of people experiencing chronic homelessness; undergraduate students collaborating with companies like Meta on next-generation infrastructure; and graduate programs taking engineers into communities across six continents.
Hear from Department Head Jeremy Guest, faculty researchers Rosa Maria Espinosa Marzal, Ashlynn Stillwell, Nishant Garg, and Mani Golparvar-Fard, and educator EJ Ignacio on what it means to train engineers for a workforce that is increasingly technology-driven and globally connected — and why integrating AI into core engineering education matters now.
