Not all CDI needles are created equal.
On most IFR avionics, the needle’s sensitivity changes with the mode. Enroute mode gives you a wide-scale view — big deflections for hundreds of feet off course. Terminal mode tightens the needle, and approach mode makes it even more sensitive.
