A new study out of the University of the Basque Country, led by Iñaki Intxaurbe with colleagues at the University of Bordeaux and published this summer in the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, argues that Ice Age cave art was organised according to consistent structural rules rather than isolated, unconnected mark-making. Network analysis and multivariate statistics applied to more than 500 figures across nine Magdalenian caves around the Bay of Biscay found a recurring core trio, bison, horses, and ibex, appearing together consistently, with directional habits repeating across sites that had no visual contact with each other: horses tend to face right, most other animals tend to face left. Intxaurbe describes this as an underlying organisational grammar, structural rather than linguistic, and has released the full dataset and methodology as open source specifically so other researchers can test it against caves outside the study area.
A genetic study from the University of Copenhagen, published in Nature Ecology and Evolution, examined DNA from 132 people buried in a megalithic tomb near Bury, roughly 50 kilometres north of Paris, used across two distinct periods separated by a population collapse around 3000 BC. Lead author Fredrik Valdiviezo Schulz found that the community buried before the collapse traced back to Stone Age farming populations from northern France and Germany, while the population buried after traced to southern France and Iberia. The community was not simply reduced. It was replaced. Ancient pathogen DNA found traces of plague and louse-borne relapsing fever, though senior author Martin Sikora was careful to frame the cause as a layered combination of disease, environmental stress, and other disruptions rather than a single trigger. Burial patterns shifted from multi-generational extended families to a structure centred on a single male lineage, tracking with the broader disappearance of Europe's megalithic building tradition. An international team led from the University of Cologne, publishing in Science Advances, has used nickel isotope analysis on marine clay from the K-Pg boundary layer worldwide to identify the Chicxulub impactor as a CI or CM-type carbonaceous chondrite, one of the rarest meteorite classes ever recovered on Earth, with an isotope signature pointing to an origin beyond Jupiter's orbit. Study coauthor Christian Köberl has been building this case since a 2024 ruthenium isotope study, and the new nickel data provides a second independent confirming line of evidence for a rock estimated at 10 to 15 kilometres across, travelling at roughly 64,000 kilometres per hour on impact.
