Tambora in 1815 produced the year without a summer. The Laki eruption in 1783 killed roughly a quarter of Icelands population through famine and dropped Northern Hemisphere temperatures for a year. Pinatubo in 1991, a fraction of Laacher-See’s size, cooled the planet by half a degree for two years. A Laacher-See-scale eruption occurring at exactly the wrong moment is a genuinely plausible mechanism, not a fringe theory George is dismissing out of hand. But the gaps in the volcanic case are just as real as the gaps in the comet case. Even the more recent Greene and Baldini paper argues for an eruption that nobody has actually identified: no tephra, no ash layer, no dated eruptive event matches what the theory requires. The volcanic hypothesis rests almost entirely on one proxy, the platinum spike, reinterpreted rather than newly discovered, and it has not produced a competing explanation for the shocked quartz found across five continents, or for why the anomaly layer appears at sites thousands of kilometres apart, all dating within decades of each other, a spread that a single eruptions fallout does not naturally explain.$
