Cavalleria Rusticana live (The Haque 1938) conductor: Pietro Mascagni.
This edition of Cavalleria Rusticana came into being following a recording made on november 7, 1938 at the Royal Theatre in the Haque (The Netherlands) and deserves being consigned to history on record. At this time Pietro Mascagni was already seventy-five years old and this was the last occasion Mascagni conducted his own work outside his home-country Italy. Besides two years earlier than the studio-recording from 1940 for His Masters Voice with Beniamino Gigli and the same Lina Bruna Rasa.
Lina Buna Rasa(1907-1984) is without doubt the most striking singer in this recording. Her carreer ended very tragic: About 1940 a colleague remembered: “Her marvelous voice came to life as soon as she began her scenes. This happened only onstage. We were all very affectionate toward her, but when not on the stage, she was passive, apathetic, would not speak and remained doggedly clinging to her handbag." On 20 July 1942, she sang in Cavalleria Rusticana at the outdoor arena in Pesaro. It was to be her final performance in a staged opera. Lina Bruna Rasa spent the last 36 years of her life in a mental hospital in Milan, where she died.
