The first game Castlevania had gotten for the PS2, and one that clearly took after Devil May Cry while also still staying true to Symphony of the Night's Metroidvania style gameplay.
Storywise, this is the furthest prequel to the entire franchise, explaining the origins of the Vampire Killer whip, the rise of the Belmont Clan, and the birth of Dracula, himself.

To summarize the MARVELOUS narration:
In the late 11th century, knights were heralds as God's guardians and the protectors of peace.
Two of the greatest knights were Leon Belmont & Mathias Cronquist. Their skills and trust in each other forged a powerful friendship between them.
However, one day, his wife, Elisabetha, had died, leaving him bedridden and leaving Leon to fight in his stead.
One year later, monsters were gathering nearby to the east, and Leon wanted to fight them off, but he was not permitted to by his Church.
Then, in one night, Mathias alerted Leon that the monsters' appearance was due to the presence of a vampire that livd in a castle in the forest called Eternal Night, and that Leon's own betrothed, Sara, was kidnapped to that castle.
Leon had to sacrifice his title as "Baron" in order to march through the night and towards that castle in order to save the woman that he intended to marry...
Thus, the very beginning of a holy legend of hunters and vampires...
