In 1041 he was recognized by Arrigo III as possession of the Church of Asti, then passed to the jurisdiction of Bonifacio del Vasto and in 1198 he was occupied by Asti, giving citizens real statutory rules that had vigor for a long time (Malabaila code). After 1255 the castle became a war seat against Charles I of Anjou and then against Guglielmo VII del Monferrato and was then disputed in the internal struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1315 the Ghibellines were driven out by Asti and, thanks to Castellano Sandrono Asinari, they managed to occupy the castle. In 1620 Amelio Asinari appointed his daughter Ottavia, wife of Giovanni Antonio Verasis, who was appointed in 1621 Count of half of Costigliole, with the obligation to take on the name and weapon of the Asinari. Ottavio III purchased the rights on the other half in 1658, making many changes to the structures. In 1775, King Vittorio Amedeo III was celebrated who visited the castle and in 1821 hosted the Marquis Carlo Asinari and other liberals, before the exile due to the constitutional motions. Built on the summit of the Rocca di Costigliole, a quadrangular plant of 60 meters on the side, with a height of 25 meters and with the four towers that reach 28 meters, it is one of the most impressive castles of the Asti area. A plaque placed on the pediment of a secondary door recalls the works carried out by Corrado Asinari in 1582 The west side has an entrance portal on a bilateral staircase, equipped with a parapet and platelets, with the marble coat of arms of the Asinari family. To the south there is a hanging garden and the facade is exposed with two central medieval turrets, among which the drawbridge excels. On the facade, between the windows of the penulty floor, two marble statues representing Aurelio and Giorgio Verasis Asinari stand out in the role of warriors.
