Cartagena, Columbia was our second port on our cruise. This is a beautiful Spanish style town with cobblestone streets and windy roads. This town was colonized by Spain for over 275 years.
The language spoken is predominantly Spanish. The ethnicity is a rich cultural mix of European, African and Amerindian. This town is beautiful with hand painted murals on the walls and very colorful.
Coffee is a major export and Columbia is the number 1 supplier of emeralds. 70-90% of emerald’s come from Columbia.
This was a safe town to visit. The dangerous areas of Columbia are not where we visited.
Palenqueras are women from San Basilio de Palenque, Columbia who are known for their colorful clothing. They are descendants of the first free African slaves. They pose for tourists and photographers. They sell fruits, vegetables and traditional palenque treats. They are living symbols of Afro-Columbia history. Gene & I and many others took photos with them. They charge $1.00 for a photo. It is part of how they make money.
We visited the PORT OASIS ECO PARK on our way back to the ship and enjoyed the tropical birds.
