I can’t remember being carried as a child
When I was quite young
There aren’t any photographs of someone carrying me
That I’ve ever found

I search myself for that feeling
Of being held up in the air
But when I explore my memories
I don’t find it anywhere

I must’ve been lifted at some point
I tell myself that is true
But I probably was just shifted around
Like something you don’t hold, just move

I want to be carried
Not pulled up by a grabbed arm
Not stepping on someone’s back
Trying not to do harm

I want to be carried
Just for a little while
Held up by strangers
Generous with their time

If you need to get higher
People point you to the stairs
Or tell you where the elevator is
Then leave you standing there

But I’m not needing directions
To higher floors
I want to be carried
Like I wasn’t before

Maybe I was held too briefly
Put down before I knew
Maybe I learned early on
To stay where I was put

I want to be carried
On the air, off the ground
I want to know that feeling
That I’ve never found

I want to be carried
It’s not a big deal
To people who’ve been carried
Who know how that feels

I try to stay light
Even though I love food
Even though I don’t walk much
Or do the things I should

I keep myself small
For a moment that might come
When someone lifts me up
Keeps me there for a while
I smile
And then they put me back down

I want to be carried
Above the floor, above the sound
Hands under my shoulders
And I look around

I want to be carried
Till my body learns then
This is what it feels like to trust
And experience zen

They keep me up for a moment
Then I’m back on my feet
But for once in my life
I wasn’t holding me (up)

For once in my life
I was being carried

So this is what it feels like.
