Cited as Castrum Carpani in a document from 999, it was probably nothing more than a “mastio” tower, placed inside an enclosure protected by a moat. It then followed the natural development of almost all medieval castra, adapting to the transformations necessary to make it more defensible. The castle that dominates, with its compact and imposing size, the inhabited center has a very different guise from what could have been the original medieval structure. The main entrance of the castle, located on the south side, opens on a large square. The moat that originally surrounded the castle was probably filled around the end of the sixteenth century when a reorganization of the urban area is proceeded. The tower, inserted in the early 1900s, is the oldest element of the building, consisting of stones and bricks has a square section. On a part of the tower, the signs of a drawbridge, carrucles to lift it and the Carraia entrance are clearly evident. Inside the castle you access a eighteenth -century staircase with architectural characteristics of the Neapolitan school which leads to the main floor where the renovated salons in the seventeenth century open. A great salon used as a library, adorned with late eighteenth century decorations, and a vast dining room, with an ancient drawer ceiling, adorned with a large fireplace which replaced the original weapon room. A very interesting and well preserved structure is the kitchen. Ricted slits, tunnels, pitfalls and dark prisons attest to the role of "castrum" in the continuous struggles due to the dominance of the territory. Conservation: the Marquise Laura Chiavari and the Marquis Giacomo, after studying on ancient drawings of the castle, have important restoration and embellishment works.
