What’s the difference between lactose and corn syrup solids?
Lactose is found in breast milk and cow’s milk. It’s also in most routine baby formulas.
Corn syrup solids are used in reduced-lactose or lactose-free formulas, which you may use if your baby has tummy troubles or cow’s milk protein allergy.
High fructose corn syrup is not used in infant formula. It’s a different ingredient altogether, made by converting some of the glucose in corn syrup into fructose to make it sweeter.
While corn syrup solids come from corn starch too, they serve a very different purpose — they’re a gentle, easily digestible source of carbohydrates for babies who can’t tolerate lactose.
So while the names sound similar, corn syrup solids and high fructose corn syrup are not the same thing. Baby formulas are designed to provide the right balance of carbs, fats, and proteins to support healthy growth — without added high fructose corn syrup.
