How to make High temperature resistant moulds using Laminating resins and gelcoat - Ready for Prepreg oven curing.

Hi everyone! In this short video I explain how to use laminating resins from Easy Composites called EG160 for the gelcoat and EL160 for the laminating epoxy to create a strong backing layer!

To start your project you will need a mastermould or plug or part you want to mould! The big advantage of this system is that your mastermould/plug/part doesn't need to be high temperature resistant! You just do a wet lay up as you would normally do, they you are able to demould and proceed with the postcure of the mould without your mastermould.

To start this project I use the Chemical release agent from Easy Composites to be sure the mould will come of the mastermould.
Then you can proceed with mixing the EG160 gelcoat by adding 25% of hardener that is included in the kit. Make sure to mix it well for over more than 2 minutes to make sure it is properly mixed. try to avoid mixing in to much air for better results while brushing it on by brush on your mastermould. Once the first layer is cured to a B-stage you can continue the process with a second layer and let it go to a B-stage again. Now you are able to apply the backing layers that can be fiberglass, kevlar or also called aramid, carbonfiber or any other type of backing you desire, as long as it is compatible with the EL160 high temperature epoxy resin. Make sure to stay in the same resin system to avoid having problems later on. Let it Cure for 24 hours preferably wait 48 hours. Keep in mind that epoxy resins will only be fully cured at room temperature after around 7 days. After demoulding the part with wedges you can proceed to the postcuring stage. You Can find the exact curing cycles on Easy Composites website in the Technical data sheet. I used a postcure of around 16 hours, going from room temperature to 130 degrees celcius. so a ramp of around 0.1 degree C per minute. This is to make sure your mould won't warp or leave prints if it cures to rapidly. After the postcure you can proceed to the trimming and shaping of your moulds. If you still need to correct some errors or mistakes you are able to do that by sanding and polishing again to high gloss. Now apply some release agent and you are ready to use your mould with some out of autoclave prepregs!!!
