Is despelote the first documentary game built in Unity?
despelote isn’t your typical sports game. Rather than stepping into the cleats of a soccer pro, you play as a young boy kicking a ball through the streets of Quito, Ecuador, in 2001 – the year the country qualified for the World Cup for the first time.
Julián Cordero and Sebastián Valbuena’s unique approach to the documentary genre garnered significant critical acclaim, winning “Excellence in Audio” at the 2024 IGF Awards and “Best Game Beyond Entertainment” at the 22nd British Academy Games Awards.
Watch as Julián Cordero (game designer, programmer) and Ian Berman (sound designer) discuss bringing a specific moment in time to life with Unity using real-world photos and 3D scans, improvised dialog, and audio captures of Quito’s unique soundscapes managed with FMOD.
