~Program Notes~
The film scoring industry has traditionally been extremely male-dominated. Captain Marvel, the first female superhero-led film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is also the first MCU film to be scored by a woman (Pinar Toprak). Toprak is also the first female composer to score a film that grossed more than a billion dollars. At its core, Toprak’s score tells the story of a woman who stands up after getting knocked down. “I’m All Fired Up” moves from a lamenting interlude to swelling brass and driven string ostinatos as Captain Marvel achieves her full potential. Her main theme for the titular superhero is energetic and powerful; she uses a minor 7th interval to represent Captain Marvel’s mantra of “higher, further faster.” When we conceived of this concert, we knew Captain Marvel was the only possible way to start.
