I review the 32nd serial from Republic, their “adaptation” of Captain America. This is the first Marvel comics film adaptation and in spite of Republic only using the name and costume it remains one of the best films adapted from a Marvel comic. Surprisingly, this was the most expensive serial Republic produced, and originally started out as another comic character adaptation entirely. Despite an 11th hour change to Captain America this is a well produced serial co-directed by the legendary John English. The action is great and so is the lead hero performance by Dick Purcell. But the main draw is the performance of Lionel Atwill as the main villain. He steals every single frame of this serial and gives it such a delicious energy. I do think the serial is a bit overlong at 15 chapters but English’s co-direction really gives enough energy to keep audience interest. Unfortunately the only official release is this old nostalgia merchant VHS tape made from various print scans done in the early 1980s.
