Can obesity break your thyroid?
We have spent decades blaming hypothyroidism for weight gain. But what if—in some people—the weight problem came first? What if an obesogenic diet creates a metabolic environment that leaves the thyroid working harder, growing bigger…and still producing less thyroid hormone?
This study uncovered a double strike:
Less T4 leaving the thyroid.
Less active T3 reaching the cells.
Inside the thyroid, the thyroglobulin assembly line was jamming. Out in the tissues, the enzymes responsible for converting T4 into T3 were underperforming. Even rising TSH could not rescue the situation.
And then the researchers changed the diet.
