Animation CAN be self-taught, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. There are a lot of great non-traditional paths to learning animation. The best of which, in my opinion, are online learning schools like Animation Mentor or iAnimate which are cheaper than traditional schools (though still pricey) but still provide a good education.
That being said, if you've got the time and money and a good school in your area that you can attend in-person, then nothing beats the in-class experience in my opinion.
Learning from SOME kind of school or teacher will teach you MUCH faster than on your own, and they'll instill good habits, practices, and mindsets on you. It's a really tough industry, I wouldn't recommend making it even tougher by trying to do it completely on your own. #shorts
