Heart disease is still a leading cause of death, but emerging research suggests that a naturally occurring bile acid called TUDCA may influence atherosclerosis through mechanisms that go beyond cholesterol lowering. In animal studies, TUDCA markedly reduced arterial plaque formation in the setting of a high-fat, high-sugar diet—even without lowering cholesterol—by dampening inflammatory signaling inside the artery wall. Similar inflammatory pathways have also been observed in human arterial tissue, and TUDCA has been shown to suppress these signals. This is not evidence of a proven therapy in humans—but it highlights a growing scientific focus on targeting vascular inflammation and metabolic stress as potential root drivers of atherosclerosis.
