Construction has started on the Funan Techo Canal - one of the biggest construction projects in Cambodian history. It's a 180KM canal that will connect the Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand - effectively cutting out Vietnam from shipping via water. Most manufacturing in Cambodia is done in larger cities like Phnom Penh, Battambang, and Siem Reap. These cities are all connected by water. To ship the goods, it makes sense to go via the Tonle Sap to the Mekong, through Vietnam, and to the South China Sea. This new canal will make it possible to go from the Tonle Sap to the Gulf of Thailand without leaving Cambodian territory. It's a step towards making Cambodia more independent.
But there are some concerns. We'll go through them all, and I'll also take you to one of the groundbreaking celebrations that happened when the Cambodian government declared a holiday in order for all Cambodians to have a chance to celebrate the future canal.
