California Quail mostly eat seeds and leaves. Feeds on a wide variety of plants. Especially annual weeds, eating the seeds, leaves, and fresh shoots. They also eat berries, flowers, acorns, bulbs, insects.
Males have a teardrop-shaped plume, black face, black throat lined by white stripes, and gray chest. The black and brown feather tips on the belly makes the California quail look it has scaled underparts.
California quails feature a backward-facing toe known as a hallux, which can be seen in their footprints.
The head plume or topknot appears to be a single feather, it is not it a cluster of six overlapping feathers.
