PlanetSapling 🌱Over a 1000 oil spills have happened in the Ecuadorean Amazon from 2000 until now. This video focuses on how one US state is quite responsible for this issue. The fate of the great Amazon rainforest in Ecuador is linked to the fate of California by oil. About 89% of the crude oil exported from the Amazon forest comes from the country of Ecuador.
Now 66% of this crude Amazonian oil goes to the U.S., mainly into California! Despite its progressive image and progressive leaders like this guy, new research shows California consumes more oil from the Amazon than any other region in the world. While the state of California has policies to reduce domestic oil drilling, much of the fossil fuels received in the state are from places such as the Amazon located outside of US borders. Marathon, Chevron, and Valero – all in California – are the top 3 refiners of oil from the Amazon. Chevron has spent nearly $2 billion fighting its court-ordered mandate to pay $9.5 billion in clean-up and community reparations costs that it is responsible for in Ecuador.
California’s GDP is 3 trillion dollars which is the largest by US state and the 5th largest economy globally. Meanwhile, the country of Ecuador has a total GDP of 98 billion dollars - 30 times less than the state of California! It is no surprise that the new President Guillermo Lasso wants to double oil drilling because poor countries want to follow the path of wealth and prosperity of rich countries like the US.

This video features a collection of excerpts from the book titled 'The Web of Life' by Fritjof Capra.
The new paradigm may be called a holistic world view, seeing the world as an integrated whole rather than a dissociated collection of parts. It may also be called an ecological view, if the term "ecological" is used in a much broader and deeper sense than usual. Deep ecological awareness recognizes the fundamental interdependence of all phenomena and the fact that, as individuals and societies we are all embedded in and ultimately dependent on the cyclical process of nature.
Shallow ecology is anthropocentric, or human-centered. It views humans as above or outside nature, as the source of all value, and ascribes only instrumental, or 'use', value to nature. Deep ecology does not separate humans - or anything else - from the natural environment. It does see the world not as a collection of isolated objects but as a network of phenomena that are fundamentally interconnected and interdependent. Deep ecology recognizes the intrinsic value of all human beings and views humans as just one particular strand in the web of life. The Russia-Ukraine War and Fossil Fuel Pipelines (Feat. @SpencerSnyder)PlanetSapling 🌱2022-04-13 | Watch Spencer's video here and subscribe to his channel! - youtube.com/watch?v=Pxc4ybjHSfs The Russia-Ukraine war has serious repercussions for climate change mitigation or acceleration! The Russia and #Ukraine war could be a pivoting point in the energy transition of the Western bloc.
#Russia is the world’s second largest exporter of natural gas and the third largest exporter of oil. The European Union receives around 40% of its gas from Russia with Germany and Italy leading the dependency in Western Europe! An extensive pipeline infrastructure connects Russia to many parts of Europe.
So the current Russia vs Ukraine war can lead us down two paths: it could increase fossil fuel drilling in other parts of the world OR be a strong opportunity for a rapid clean energy transition!
Fossil fuels have funded Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Moreover, fossil fuels are a powerful weapon in geopolitics. Even if Russia’s military and strategic objectives fail with Ukraine, the country has enough power to manipulate energy markets in Europe.

Microplastics are actively harming human health to an extent. Microplastics and humans have a complex and toxic relationship. The link between microplastics and human health is still being widely researched. Estimates suggest that we are ingesting 5 grams of microplastics every week! Plastic pollution has already entered our human bodies and microplastic consumption has harmful human health impacts. Plastics have played a major role in food and water storage but that is one of the direct causes of our high plastic ingestion. Most microplastics we ingest are generated from the breaking of plastics we use in our daily activities and the breakdown of plastics polluting our environment by weathering and photo-degradation. Microplastics are found everywhere in the human body including the human placenta and microplastics in human cells are a common observation too.
Basically, if you eat or drink directly from plastic containers, bottles, or packaging - which most us do - you are undoubtedly ingesting microplastics. Microplastics are a complex and diverse set of pollutants instead of simply smaller plastics. They are a group of various types of environmental pollutants much like pesticides or heavy metals are a vast array of pollutants. Studies have reported microplastics and #nanoplastics passing through our circulatory and lymphatic systems after ingestion and inhalation. The general potential impacts of microplastics on human health are related to oxidative stress, tissue inflammation, and increased uptake or translocation. Translocation means that microplastics transport to other organs and enter our living cells. They can transport to and accumulate in the tissues of the liver, kidneys, lungs, and spleen.
So eating plastics is detrimental to health but more studies are needed for human health effects and determining optimal thresholds of exposure and toxicity. There has never been a better time to reduce our consumption of plastics and advocate for better alternatives and reduction of single use plastics. So lets work on this together because we need to improve planetary health and that of future generations. Let's tackle #plasticpollution together.

They provide different answers to the question of what it means to be human and alive. Indigenous peoples day needs to truly honor indigenous tribes and help alleviate their struggles against oppression.
All of the species of the Earth and their ecosystems constitute the BIOSPHERE which provides life supporting services. The ethnosphere is the anthropological equivalent of the biosphere which contains the myriad indigenous cultures and their complex belief systems which provide alternative models of human life itself.
The term indigenous means 'naturally occurring in a particular place' or 'native'. Indigenous peoples who have successfully adapted to their environments have adopted cultural practices which work with nature rather than against her. The long term survival of any species depends on the health of its environment and humans are no different.
Many tribes live in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia. There are hunter gatherer tribes and bushmen living in parts of Africa as well. All of these tribes have unique answers to the question of what it means to be human. While their cultures are unique, a common philosophy is to take care of the land and water.
We often see modern humans as destructive to life on Earth. Some environmentalists have even compared the human species to cancer cells or viruses destroying our planet. However, this has never been the norm throughout the evolutionary history of humankind. Indigenous cultures offer alternative and sustainable models of human life which we can learn from. As we have seen, successful indigenous peoples see themselves as caretakers of their lands and biodiversity.
We need to respect indigenous cultures and support them in the fight against corporate interests. If you want to dive into this topic, I recommend learning from impactful organizations such as Indigenous Environmental Network, Cultural Survival, 350.org, Pachamama Alliance, and Survival International among many others.

Plastic pollution is now a complex geopolitical and systemic issue which does not have a single solution - there is no silver bullet.
The combination of targeting plastic manufacturers to reduce virgin plastic production while switching to recycled plastics, policies to reduce single use plastic use, investments in truly biodegradable and sustainable alternatives, and product design for circularity is our path forward to a plastic pollution free future.
We need to ultimately move towards a circular economy where waste is only wasted resources.

Plastic waste inputs from land into the ocean (Jambeck et al., 2015) - science.sciencemag.org/content/347/6223/768.fullThis is How Cities Cause Climate ChangePlanetSapling 🌱2021-10-12 | Devastating floods in Western Europe and China, heatwaves, wildfires, and drought in North America are some of the most recent examples of extreme weather events linked to climate change. At the heart of climate change is the increasing global average temperatures due to rising greenhouse gases produced by human activity primarily due to the combustion of fossil fuels. For the first time in history, human civilization is living under an atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration of over 410 ppm.
Climate change is already affecting millions of people. More than half of the global population lives in urban areas, which concentrate most of industrial, trade and service activities. Hence, cities are responsible for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. However, there is an inequality of emissions coming from cities in different countries. This is due to the inequality in consumption and production of goods. About 63% of current emissions come from mainly cities in developing countries due to their economic growth. Cities and climate change are inextricably connected.
Urban climate change is an increasingly important issue. Climate change and the future of cities is dependent on how we control urban emissions.
