The Bush DAC90a was a very popular radio in the UK in its day for broadcast reception in the home. Now a vintage radio, there are plenty of them available at collectors markets and on the Internet.
As they are relatively compact, they make an ideal genuine vintage radio for many homes or for starting a vintage radio collection.
Produced by the Bush Radio Company, the DAC90A was introduced in February 1950 and followed on from its predecessor the DAC90. The 90A was the better radio, using more modern glass envelope B8A based valves (tubes) and a much improved circuit.
The DAC90A vintage radio was produced until towards the end of the 1950s and during its production life it was very popular. It had an advantages that it was at the lower end of the market, but even so, the cost represented a few weeks of the average wage.
The circuit for the DAC90A was relatively straightforward. It was a single conversion superheterodyne radio using four valves in the radio section and one for the power rectification.
At this time, many people still only had DC supplies and therefore the radio was designed to be powered by either AC or DC. However this meant that there was a direct connection of the mains into the radio and therefore great care was needed when working on them as the chassis or any metalwork could easily become live.
