The operational amplifier or op amp is one of the most important analogue circuit blocks. It's available in a variety of integrated circuit formats. It's used because it has a very high input impedance, and a low output impedance and on top of this it has a very high gain.
The input circuit is a differential amplifier, so it has two inputs, one marked plus and the other minus.
If a signal is applied to the plus or non-inverting input the output is in the same phase as the input, but if the signal is applied to the negative or inverting input the signal is inverted or 180 degrees out of phase. If the same signal is applied to both, then there's no output.
Op-amps are used in circuits with feedback and this enables them to be used as amplifiers, oscillators integrators, differentiators and many more functions
