In this video i give a quick informative overview about quartz crystals and how they work as resonators in electronic circuit providing very high levels of performance.

Quartz crystals used in all sorts of things: radios, test equipment, microprocessor boards for rock stable clock signals and much more . . .

As the name indicates, these resonators are made from quartz - this is a naturally occurring example but its got lots of flaws so man made crystals are normally used.

They work because they exhibit the piezo electric effect - a stress on the crystal causes a voltage across it and vice vera. This means they can link their very sharp mechanical resonances to the electrical circuit.

These crystals are available as leaded versions, and also as surface mount options.

Inside the package there's a small piece of quartz and the dimensions and other characteristics govern the frequency of operation.
