Founded in 2019, the International Center for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS-Sofia) was built with an ambitious goal: create a globally connected research environment capable of attracting world-class mathematicians, while giving young researchers in Bulgaria and South-Eastern Europe real long-term career opportunities.
Funded by the Simons Foundation and the Bulgarian government, and affiliated with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, ICMS-Sofia has already attracted renowned mathematicians like Philip Griffiths and Maxim Kontsevich — and seen six early-career researchers convert visiting positions into permanent roles. It's a rapid rise for an institute aiming to become a lasting name on the world map of mathematics.
