In Part 2 of this series, I continue building what I hope will be my ultimate Panasonic 3DO FZ-1.
This Japanese console is converted to run safely on UK 240v mains power by replacing the internal transformer. With that done, the original CD-ROM drive is removed and replaced with a Fixel Optical Drive Emulator, paired with an SSD so the system can run games without using discs at all.
To keep everything neat and secure, I designed a custom 3D printed mount that holds both the ODE and the SSD inside the console. If you don’t have a 3D printer at home, services like PCBWay make it easy to get production quality parts printed directly from your own designs.
The hardware side of the build comes together nicely, but as always with projects like this, things don’t quite go to plan by the end…
Part 3 will round out the build and finally put the system through its paces.
