Why do Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons start drifting?

Inside the original Joy-Con stick are potentiometers with physical contacts moving across resistive material. As those parts wear, the controller can begin registering movement even when you aren't touching the stick.

In the full video I take the Joy-Cons apart, show what's going on inside and replace both original sticks with GuliKit TMR joysticks.
