Think all migratory birds in North America "head south for the winter"? Guess again! This week's Bird of the Week is here to remind us of the astounding diversity of bird behavior.
Most Buff-bellied Hummingbirds are resident (non-migratory), and some migrate short distances south from Texas into Mexico. But other populations are keeping bird scientists guessing 🤔 with a unique behavior… These mavericks migrate northwards to winter along the central Gulf Coast well into Louisiana or (even more uncommonly) as far east as Florida!
American Bird Conservancy staff in the Rio Grande Joint Venture (@RioGrandeJV) are working with state, federal, and nongovernmental organizations in both the U.S. and Mexico to help preserve Tamaulipan Brushlands habitat used by the Buff-bellied Hummingbird as well as other distinctive species of this habitat.
