Talk about a “peck”uliar appetite… the Kaempfer’s Woodpecker prefers to feast on ants. (Bonus points for carpenter ants!)

Nicknamed the "Avian Anteater," this bamboo-loving bird spends its days drilling into dead bamboo canes to uncover ant colonies. This species is endemic to Brazil's Cerrado, the world's most biodiverse savanna and home to 30 bird species found nowhere else on Earth.
First documented in 1926, this woodpecker then seemingly disappeared for 80 years. Many believed it had gone extinct until its rediscovery by researchers in 2006.
Scientists have never documented its courtship displays, nest, eggs, chicks, or parental care, so much of its life remains a mystery and makes us wonder what else there is to learn!
