I decided to buy a product called Brusho Water Crystals made by Colourcraft in the UK. These are very fine crystals that you dissolve into water and then they're ready for use.

I've tested these for application from an Air Brush and Paper Towel.

The Air Brush probably just throws out too much liquid which with these less is by far the better option.

Application by paper towel gives you a very light pastel colour to start with, which letting the colour dry for a very short period of time you can go over it again and again to build up the intensity of the colour and produce some really bold colours.
