So recently I spotted the Old Emmer Wheat Bourbons in my local Total Wine store. Emmer Wheat is known as an ancient grain from Egypt. They had two different proofs available, the regular was 90 Proof and retailed for $43 and this cask strength was $49 for a 116.6 proof bottling. At only $7 more, I selected the cask strength to review for you. Now Emmer wheat has been used before by other distilleries. Just last year, Buffalo Trace released the Daniel Weller Bourbon that used it and was an 11-year-old at 94 proof with a retail price of $500.
The Bothers Bond Cask Strength Bourbon retails at $80 and is this bottling was 114.08 proof. It’s created by blending 3 different mash bills to create a high rye 4-Grain Bourbon. The main mash bill of 65% corn, 22% rye with a fluctuating percentage of wheat and barley for the remainder (in the 3 different mash bills). It’s aged a minimum of 4 years in a brand-new American Oak barrel with a heavy #4 char on the staves, but only a #2 on the heads.
The Brothers Bond American Blended Rye retails for $48 and is bottled at 95 Proof. It’s a 4-grain blended rye with a final mashbill of 77% rye, 16% corn, with a similar fluctuating percentage of wheat and barley for the remainder. It’s a blend of their signature bourbon and a straight rye mash bill, both aged in new American oak with a heavy #4 char for a minimum of 4 years.
