Abstract: Holography provides a classical gravitational description of certain strongly coupled quantum field theories (QFTs). A gravitational theory and a QFT related by holography are said to be holographically dual to one another. I will review a particular example of this, in which the quantum field theory is a supersymmetric gauge theory in four-dimensions coupled to matter fields (N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to N=2 hypermultiplets). I will discuss solutions of the holographically dual gravitational theory that describe this theory with translational symmetry broken by position-dependent masses for the matter fields. At low energies, the resulting QFT has defects at the loci of vanishing mass.

What do we do all day in the School of Celtic Studies 🤔 [Part 2!] From reading, investigating connections between texts, translating, manuscript work, preparation for articles, seminars and conference papers: it’s hard to balance it all! 📚 But we still have time to do podcasts 👀🎙️ so listen to “Ní hansae”, the Research Podcast of the School of Celtic Studies in DIAS, to learn more about our work! 🎧 A day in the life: Celtic Studies! Title: ceff as a new invariant of 3-manifolds
Abstract: This talk reports on a recent progress towards understanding new structures in low-dimensional topology inspired by physics. Namely, we introduce and study numerical quantity ceff for a closed, oriented 3-manifold M. This has a physical interpretation as a rate of growth of supersymmetric states in gauge theory T[M] corresponding to M. We test several conjectures related to T[M] and ceff for a class of integer homology 3-spheres. Based on arXiv:2508.10087.
