A 37-year-old Spokane man has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson in connection with the Old Trails Fire, one of the most destructive wildfires in the city’s history.
Aaron F. Farinacci was taken into custody Monday afternoon at his residence in the 2800 block of West Elliott Drive after investigators linked him to the fire’s origin point. Witnesses reported seeing him kneeling in the grass near where the blaze ignited on Saturday, August 1. He was found with waterproof matches and a butane lighter.
Farinacci has a prior felony conviction for manslaughter in Arizona after fatally shooting his father in 2010.
The Old Trails Fire destroyed approximately 640 structures, with the broader Spokane Complex fires responsible for around 700 structures lost and tens of thousands of evacuations. As of the latest updates, the fires remain at 0% containment.
