Branle des Lavandieres (Washerwomen's Branle) preformed by Atlanta Historic Dance

The Branle des Lavandieres is an easy circle dance described in Arbeau's Orchésographie (1589).

The Branle began in the 12th-century French chain dance. Barnle comes from the French verb branler which means to shake, wave, sway, wag, wobble. This word is used to refer to the side-to-side movenet that the dancers perform while in a circle. The Barnel was then adopted by European elite between 1450 and 1650. The dances were especially popular in France where they began, but were also popular in England where the word "barnle" got anglicized to “brawl.

Aristocrats frequently performed pantomimic branles in which they scolded each other as you will see in this dance.

This video is from a performance of Atlanta Historic Dance and Lauda Musicam of Atlanta. In this collaborative concert Lauda Musicam performed early dance music as Atlanta Historic Dane performed.
