A battery and speaker can let you make beats anywhere.
But is making beats anywhere really the same thing as MUSIC PRODUCTION?
A comment claimed that having an MPC Live 3 or MPC Sample with a battery and speaker means you can make beats wherever you go.
My response is simple:
Music production is MUCH BIGGER than portability.
In this video, I explain how product marketing can eventually become part of the language producers use to describe creativity. Features like portability, batteries, speakers, faster workflows and making beats anywhere can be useful—but none of those things automatically make better music.
I'm interested in producing RECORDS.
Songwriting.
Arrangement.
Sound design.
Recording.
Creative direction.
Emotion.
Experimentation.
Working with artists.
Solving problems.
Developing sounds.
Taking an idea and nurturing it until it becomes a finished song.
I share a story from my earlier production years where I made a beat at home, helped develop the song, went to the studio, discovered something needed fixing, drove back home, corrected it in Fruity Loops, returned to the studio and continued working on the record.
That entire journey was MUSIC PRODUCTION.
The mistakes were part of it.
The problem solving was part of it.
The studio was part of it.
The artist was part of it.
The final record was the destination.
Today, I'm not interested in sitting in Starbucks proving I can make a beat because my device has a battery.
I'm interested in asking:
WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY CREATING?
Portability is a feature.
Creativity is bigger than a feature.
Don't allow marketing to define your creative process.
Use the tools that help YOU create your best work, find the environment where your creativity thrives, develop your sound and focus on making records that can live beyond the product cycle.
