Rival males patrol overlapping territories, and dominance is constantly tested. Confrontations are brief but intense . Only the strongest males hold the best display sites, and only those with endurance win the prize.
Hidden in the upper canopy, the male Riflebird prepares one of the most extraordinary courtship displays in the natural world. On a chosen stage — a mossy branch, a vine-draped trunk, or the fork of a towering tree — he transforms. Wings are lifted and curved forward, forming a shimmering black oval that frames his body.
As sunlight filters through the leaves, iridescent feathers flash electric blue and green.
