Hey everyone, thanks for watching. What do you guys think? Is booktube too nice? Should booktube be more political? Which book should I read? Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein or The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander? Let me know in the comments below.

How often do you guys read Op-eds? here is mine

My Op-ed.

Bolivian Workers Force Election And Beat Back Coup Government.

A year ago, Bolivian president Evo Morales won re-election to his fourth term in office by over ten percentage points. However, a later debunked and unsubstantiated OAS report showed “irregularities” in the results. This caused a rapid chain of events to happen. The leader of the military demanded Evo Morales step down. Jeanine Áñez declared herself interim president and reimplemented deathsquads, killing dozens of Morales supporters. Evo Morales fled his house just hours before it was raided, not having time to take his dog which was murdered in the military raid. All this is what reasonable people call a military coup, including Elon Musk, who was openly in favor of the coup due to his desire to control Bolivia's abundance of lithium.

Last Sunday, Morales' ally Luis Arse won the election in a landslide for the MAS socialist party. He beat Carlos Mesa, the center right neo-liberal candidate. Mesa was involved in the administration before Morales, which reimplemented death squads to extrajudicially kill opposition supporters. Yes, centrist presidents can have dictatorial tendencies too. The far right party, who seized power after the military coup, came in a distant third, due to their military coup, poor management of the Coronavirus, and multiple cancelations of elections. Labor unions memers forced general elections to happen with a two week general strike, where they blocked important bridges and roads.

Most of the critiques of the MAS party are extremely hard to take seriously. In an article published in The Atlantic by Yascha Mounk, he focuses on authoritarian tendencies of “the left and the right,” while completely ignoring centrist authoritarianism. Centrist authoritarianism is a historically huge problem in Bolivia, with the administration elected prior to Morales being protested out of office for reimplementing death squads, and the unelected administration after implementing death squads immediately. It’s worth noting that the Morales Arce administration never used death squads.

Writers like Mounk ignore these authoritarian centrist operations in Bolivia because they either have no knowledge of them, or because they are willing to excuse centrist authoritarianism due to ideological agreement. Mounk and many others such as the Times and Post were unable to even identify this as the clear and obvious coup it was. Once again, they were misinformed or informed but apologetic for ideological reasons.

None of this is to say that left leaders in Latin America can’t do anything wrong. They can. However, most criticism of left leaders is usually done by bad faith actors that want to control the country's natural resources and dominate the country's working class. Morales and Arse increased the real minimum wage by over 100 percent, increased GDP growth three fold, and decreased extreme poverty from 38.2 percent when he took office to under 20 percent. They invested huge amounts of money towards hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. While these are all things that helped the Bolivian people, these are not things that help the US owner class or government. As such, any allegations made by Washington based organizations like the OAS, imperialist US government officials, or large US media companies against leftist Latin American leaders should be scrutinized heavily, or at least taken with a pinch of salt.
