In my first BookTube Book Haul, I ordered a full 12-book set of Swallows & Amazons books by Arthur Ransome. This legend of classic British children's literature was not only one of the finest writers and storytellers, but he was also a spy for MI6. But he is best known for the beloved Swallows and Amazons adventures which take place between 1930 and 1934 in the Lake District, in northern England, and also in the Norfolk Broads and various other locations around the British Isles. Focusing mainly on sailing, camping, and other outdoor pursuits, these books are packed full of authentic, believable adventures, featuring intelligent and highly capable children who co-operate with each other to achieve success in their various endeavours. The books are written entirely from the perspective of the children, who are left blissfully to their own devices with minimal adult supervision, apart from one or two trusted allies. The books are now a nostalgic and faraway view of what childhood once was, and will probably never be again.
