After Bobby was dropped from his record label Epic, he vowed that he would come up with a big hit to show that they were wrong in letting him go. He did so on his first try, and made a big comeback. Original Billboard review: "First effort on ABC for veteran, always popular song stylist. Probably the most commerical thing he's come up with in a long while, moving from tempo to tempo with catchy lyrics. Could easily cross to pop".
Earlier in 1974, a version of this song with the same melody but different lyrics, called "Don't Stay Away Too Long" was a #3 UK hit for Peters and Lee.
