The Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing is now producing fifth-generation high-voltage batteries and battery modules for use in the BMW iX and BMW i4. Simultaneously, BMW is ramping up manufacturing of its fifth-generation electric motor, which has been developed in Dingolfing since 2020 for the BMW iX3 and will also power the BMW iX and BMW i4.
Between 2020 and 2022, the BMW Group will invest more than 500 million euros in boosting production capacity for e-drives at its Dingolfing plant alone. It plans to produce e-drives for more than half a million electric vehicles by 2022. Between 2020 and 2022, the BMW Group will invest approximately 790 million euros in developing capacity for electric powertrain components at its Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg, and Steyr facilities.
A high-voltage battery with cutting-edge battery cell technology is also part of BMW eDrive technology. For the production of fifth-generation battery cells, the BMW Group and its suppliers decided to use only renewable green power. The overall performance, charging and discharging characteristics, longevity, and safety of the high-voltage battery are all exceptional. Different module variations can now be produced on the same production line, in keeping with the growing range of electrified vehicle models and performance levels. The manufacturing systems are extremely adaptable and scalable. At each BMW Group production facility, battery modules are made from supplied prismatic battery cells. Model-specific high-voltage batteries can be made using these components in a variable configuration thanks to an in-house developed modular system.
